The well known FX TD Anselm von Seherr-Thoss just shared with us a making of an explosion he made for 21 Jump Street the movie remake of the 80s tv show.
Initial RnD involved deforming of the car as well. For the actual shots I got animation delivered. FumeFX for various elements like the main explosion, dedicated window fire, secondary ground fire, etc. Procedural and hand painted burn maps and vanilla PFlow for window and secondary fire. He rendered it in VRay.

    looks awful. The car has apparently no weight. They should have used a real rigged car explosion instead. This would have looked more realistic and credible. This looks like something from a videogame.
