AC: I feel the difference between a traditional artist and a CG artist is usually only the selection of topic and the medium. Traditional artists’ topics are usually the people, places or things they experience in their lives. Or they create religious, historical or cultural paintings. On the other hand, CG artists tend to focus more on creating new world views. Because of the topics I’m inclined to select I always feel I’m closer to traditional artists. I think I’m just more honest in presenting what I want to express in terms of topic selection. IA: What's the most important quality for you in your artwork? Light, color, something else? AC: For me, I think it’s the emotions. It is so important for me to interpret the human emotions through facial expressions, body language and the various ways of expressing emotions such as joy, warmth, anger, humor and embarrassment. It is also important for me that I capture the emotion of the environment, which comes from the lighting and mood. I focus on all of these aspects because to me emotions are what move one’s heart. Everyone is attracted to something different, as long as do what you want to do I think it’ll be a good work. IA: Your artworks are often very realistic; can you explain us why you've made these artistic choices? AC: I think it’s probably just personal preference. More often it is traditional realistic works that move me and I feel that by being realistic I can express more tension and more details. IA: What does CG bring to your personal art? And in what ways is conceiving an illustration on a screen different from creating a traditional sketch? AC: I love to watch movies, especially when I see a part that touches me and I am inspired and enlightened by it. I feel that painting is just like creating a single picture version of a movie, full of drama and tension, and I happen to favor works with such feelings. CG to me is just a tool, and its advantages are that it is easy to modify, much more convenient than traditional art. Since my works are often going through various adjustments, the ability to edit with ease is very important to me. IA: Could you name a few artists from your country and/or the Asian continent that you like? AC: Some of famous Japanese illustrators I like a lot are Katsuya Terada and Tatsuyuki Tanaka. When I was younger I also liked the comic artist Akira Toriyama’s work, as well as Hayao Miyazaki. As for Taiwanese artists, my favorite is Chen Uen. He mixes realism with Chinese water painting and he is very famous even in China and Japan. |
