STEP 6. A GUN OR A BLADE?

Initially, I designed an alien looking gun for her, but find it a bit too cheesy. I decided to go for a sword instead. During the course of mixing and matching, I still continue painting the image, adding new colors and creating new shapes to match her. As you may have also noticed, I have changed the position of the wires at her head to fit her new look and also to create a better composition. I constantly flip the image to see errors and imperfections.

STEP 7. CREATING THE SWORD

I add a separate layer to create the sword. Again, I start with a silhouette, and then define shapes, colors and add volume to it.

STEP 8. COLOURS AND OTHER ELEMENTS

As I have mentioned previously, it’s better to have a separate layer with the background and foreground. You can easily change color of the image and it is also easy to add more background elements like clouds and mountains.

STEP 9. COMPOSITION

I add mountains at the back to fill up the vacant spaces and most important, to create a better composition. As it also directs the eye were to look next. This work either way it leads or rotates your eyes to.

STEP 10. LAST FEW … AND A BIT MORE

To add textures, I create another layer above the character, set it to OVERLAY. Use a solid 1pixel size brush and start making scratches. It is important that it make those lines “scratches like” to areas where light reflects the most. Swap between colors of black and white to make it look real. Then flatten the entire image. Finally, I make some color corrections using the COLOR BALANCE, to set the mood I want. I then further add small details where it matters.

I hope you have learned something from the walkthrough in creating my artwork. Thank you and MABUHAY!
