A Gentlemen's Interview with Blur Studio

J.L -. The motion graphics you create for award shows are in a separate class and seem to be quite a lucrative piece of business. They are very smooth and interesting. Are these also done in MAX, or are you using specific motion graphics software? If yes, what kind and on which platform (PC or MAC)? Which platform do you prefer for Post-production?

A Gentlemen's Duel

B.S. - Yes, Blur has a team of graphic designers and animators that work quite a bit in the graphics world. We do a lot of branding projects for corporations like Intel and Dell as well as a plethora of entertainment-based television shows. Recently we have branched out in the arenas of commercial campaigns with advertising agencies as well theatrical trailers. Once again, Blur’s philosophy of maintaining a diverse group of projects applies in this area too. The graphics animators use MAX as well as Cinema 4D for animation and modeling and use primarily After Effects for compositing and FX. The entire studio is PC based with a very large render farm.

I.A. - Do you think your studio could make a feature-length film one day? Is it one of your goals? Or do you think it’s another kind of business?

B.S. - Yes, that is definitely our goal. Our main goal at Blur is to make great all CG animated features. The very recent Academy Award nomination Blur received for the short film “Gopher Broke” only validates our success as writers, directors and animators. We are more than prepared to venture into the world of feature films.

We are very interested in producing ALL types of genre films: sci-fi, action/adventure, fantasy as well as family films. We currently have several features in development and plan to be in production soon.

J.L. - . At Pixar, an Animator is only dedicated to that task and doesn't do modeling as well. Is it the way it works at Blur too? Does each of your artists exercise a talent in several areas of animation and graphics, or are there specialized groups of people for different tasks? (modellers, animators, textures artists, etc.)
