FOCUS : Le Clip Qui Dechire II Page 2

IT’S ART : What have you learned from the first episode and improved in this one?
Sylvain Delmé : Our goal as for « le Miroir » was to make this episode as fast as possible without any quality conpromises. Nicolas Bling has been rebuilt. His mesh, Uv’s, blendShapes, skelton and rig became the master for all characters. Then, we built Obama and every male character of the United Nations’ scenes. We used the same process to build the females based on Segolene Royal’s character from "le miroir". This way, we could re-use every animation passes on each character.
ITS ART : Can you give us the geek détails ? How many time to render the whole music video, time you’ve worked on it, etc…?
Sylvain Delmé : It tooked 2 months to achieve. We didn’t have any problems during this time. No big deal with renders: the average time per frame was 7 minutes. (same time allowed for lunches)
IT’S ART : What was the softwares/ Hardware you’ve used? Why? what was the benefits?
Sylvain Delmé : Nothing special about the hardware : we used 7 Intel "IE 7" 8 cores dedicated to this project. We mainly used "Modo" for characters and sets, "LightWave" for skinning and rigging, "MotionBuilder" for animation and a bit of "Maya" for minor things. All the renders have been made with "Lightwave 9.5". To us, this pipeline was the most efficient and fast for our needs. Modo is an amazing modelling and texturing software. Lightwave is one of the best and easiest to use render engine on the market. MotionBuilder allowed us to easily animate all the characters using a single rig.
IT'S ART : Technically, what was the most difficult part to achieve? Why?
MIXUS : Crowded scenes. We used « HD instances » to deal with these. For the United Nations’ scenes, we made 2 simple animation loops and then applied them to the 12 different characters. At render time, there are 1250 different people in the audience.Same thing for the last scene before the rocket launch: 8 different characters, and 4000 people at render time. We also used « HD » to generate buildings, boats and trees for the « Ibiza » (Miami in the English version) scene.
IT’ S ART : Except our président, what are your daily sources of inspiration?
Sylvain Delmé : His wife ! ( this is just a joke mister president, I swear). Except that : Music, politics, caricature and animation of course.
IT’S ART : How have you worked with the music/ Sound FX team?
Sylvain Delmé : Since the animation and music/ Sound FX studios are in the same place, we made numerous tests during the process to see how the image was matching the music and vice & versa. It was easy then to make minor changes and sometimes big ones in the music / sound FX or in the film itself to get a better result.
IT’S ART : How would you describe the «Mixus» touch? What’s your motto?
Sylvain Delmé : Well « un : je ne sais quoi… et voilà ! ». People and Medias often compare us to « les guignols ». We are not doing the same thing. This is really different. We wouldn’t be able to do what they do, as they couldn’t get the same results as ours. We choose another way to do some caricature stuff - As far as I know, no one has done anything like « le clip qui dechire » or « le miroir » before. We’re going to try to put the limits as far as we can in that direction. Sun shines for everybody !
IT’S ART : And now, what next?
Sylvain Delmé : We are developing a few new political characters for « le miroir » and for 2 new other concepts. (I can’t tell you more for the moment) We also plan to make another sequel of « le clip qui dechire » (so what? Lucas made 6 episodes of Star Wars, didn’t he?) And, of course, we’re looking for money! Got some ?
