| "Here are some traces of the large normal palette knives I used for the skin. The tone I picked as one color in Photoshop and then used large soft brushes in Soft light mode to determine the greens and purples of the shady sides. Highlights are made using the dodge tool with very light and barely visible texture and also painted with light tones of yellow and green on the shoulder and cheek with screen-mode on the brush. The background's interesting circles and forms are from a photograph I had taken a few days before and then added loads of contrast and color layers to it to make it softer and look less like a photo. I think it conveyed nicely the sadness and melancholy that I originally wanted this piece to deliver to the viewer. But I still wasn't sure if it was enough… " | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

| Phase 2:
As I mentioned before, I worked on this piece for four days and so in that time my ideas changed from simple to more complicated. Of course I didn't paint the entire four days, I took several breaks from the work. And each time I came back to the painting I saw something new I want to add. This time it was the red panda. On one of my breaks I watched a nature documentary about endangered pandas. It broke my heart to learn that these animals, that have been my favorite since I was a little girl, are an endangered species. So this is where the panda came from and there was the boy who had nothing left in this world to care about but this kind little animal. At first I only sketched the panda from my memory and as you can see there isn’t much resemblance to the real animal at this stage, but it's all about generating the idea first. Then there is the mask. I've done a lot of stuff with masks before and I think that it's a very good way to communicate in artistic way. You can keep your thoughts to yourself and express your feelings through your actions, not with an open and vulnerable face. That's what I thought in this case. Animals appeal to our hearts and the focus of this piece is the face of the panda and not the boys. |
