PART 2

I.A. : How long have you worked on it? How many people?

M.D. : I have worked on it for about one year. Once Honda approved my preview, I started to write the story and to define the storyboard. After that, we decided to start the production. Our team was composed of me and Simone Prisco. I directed the animation, designed the characters, and worked on photography, editing, and postproduction, Simone Prisco, a grat artist, designed all the landscape and the backgrounds of Komyo, the little town where Soshiro Honda was born. The music was written by Maestro Lino Cannavacciuolo, a composer of international fame, while the sounds effects were done by Catsound International of Rome. The voiceover was done by Gianni Musy, the same actor who gave the voice to Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings'' here in Italy. For the English version, we chose Ken Belton, an amazing theater actor.

I.A. : Can you speak about your creative process on this short movie?

M.D. : Reading Soichiro Honda’s biography, I really was struck by the early years of his life. Honda was a young man full of initiative who, in order to face the hard situation in Japan, invented a useful means of transportation by putting a motor onto his bicycle. Soshiro was a boy full of dreams who worked with his father. That little motorcycle he produced had such great success that it led him to make many others for his friends and relatives, until he went to create a real big production of Dream Type A. Nowadays, we look at the brand Honda everywhere and we know its claim "The Power of Dreams," but only a few people know the real origin of it all. The idea of the broom with the bicycle wheels came to me when I was searching for something simple and genial to express Honda's dream. When I was a child, I used to go on my bike. I remember during the rides I often put a little piece of cardboard between the bicycle wheel and the bicycle fork, to simulate a motor sound. In my imagination my bike was a real motorbike.

I.A. : How have you exchanged ideas and concepts with the client?

M.D. : Through FTP, on our server, we have an area dedicated to exchange large clips. We discussed every new idea with Honda's team. There are many details in the video that affect those who work at Honda. All things were born through close cooperation.

I.A. : Does the client provide an initial script or were you free for the whole film?

M.D. : At the beginning, there was no brief. Their desire was to communicate their history and their philosophy. When I presented the storyboard on Soichiro, they all were very impressed and they left me to work in complete harmony and trust.

I.A. : Have you used some special tools / techniques on this short?

M.D. : The short was designed and built entirely with After Effect, except for some details that needed action in 3D. Although it often is used in postproduction, AfterEffect is a powerful way to do animation, with its interpolations and management of masks. All the characters were drawn on paper, then vectorized in illustrator and finally reconstructed with masks in AfterEffect.
