Interview with joaquin Baldwim

IA: What was the most difficult task with this project?

JB: Rendering was really hard for me. I used the default Maya renderer and no Mental Ray or anything like that. I was also very limited on my rendering times since we do not count with a render farm at UCLA yet. I had to render in regular workstations whenever they were free. I had to give up ray tracing, atmospheric effects and other cool things because they would've taken my rendering times to hell.

IA: Which film are you most proud of? Papiroflexia or Sebastian's Voodoo?

SB: I'm still more proud of Papiroflexia as a general piece; it was my first big one. Sebastian's Voodoo is more technically accomplished but it's still not as important as Papiroflexia has been to me.

IA: How long did it take you to create Papiroflexia?
:

JB: From the initial idea until the very end, Papiroflexia took about 8 months.

IA: Can you tell us about your influences?

JB: Aside from my family, I can name a couple of random influences in different areas:Guillermo del Toro, Hayao Miyasaki, Dave McKean, Neil Gaiman, Pedro Almodovar, Pixar, Ashley Wood, Salvador Dali, Douglas Hofstadter, Jorge Luis Borges, Pain of Salvation, Tolkien ... as you can see, they seem to drift a bit towards literature and visual arts.

IA: Do you think what you create is art? Why?

JB: I think so, yes. Because my intentions are to create something that affects people, and hopefully gets them to think and react.

IA: What's your own definition of art?

JB: To me it is anything that one does to create a reaction in someone; to inspire, to hurt, to share, to smile. Art is too broad to be perfectly defined, especially because art can also be defined by those things which obey no boundaries and fit in no boxes.
