I.A. : One of your most awarded spots is "Legs". Can you tell me about this project?

J.L. : This project came in from Rupert Sanders from MJZ and was built out of the relationship between one of our Creative Directors Cedric Nicolas and Rupert. The spot was a lot of fun to work on and Cedric and Rupert put a lot attention into the details of how these legs would look and move. We used a combination of prosthetics and shot manipulation to make that work. Each angle that you saw the hero character walking required a different technique to make it work. In the end we were very pleased with the spot.

I.A. : Sounds like you used XSI a lot, is it one of your favorite software? Have you tested the latest version ICE? what's your opinion about it?

J.L. : We are an XSI and Maya house so we have no preference. We chose the software based on the team available and which tool is best for the job.

I.A. : What are the other software/hardware you used?

J.L. : We use XSI, Maya, Flame, Silhouette and Massive.

I.A. : Does MassMarket pipeline have evolved with the different spots you've done? How?

J.L. : We try to use a similar pipeline for every project and don’t change drastically but adjust the pipeline to fit the job. Some projects require extensive design, then previs and then move on to CG and Flame. Some are simpler and require a lot of R&D and less involved execution. We are very flexible.

I.A. - Have you developed some special technologies/scripts during recent works?

J.L. : We are more of a traditional house in that we don't often write a ton of new scripts for projects. We have a few scripting guys, but they focus a lot of their attention on keeping our techniques and pipeline efficient. I would love to employ more innovative ideas that require extensive scripting and new approaches, but with the schedules and budgets lately, it's almost impossible.

I.A. : how do you see the future of this industry?

J.L. - Cheaper, faster and better. Everyone wants something that's never been done before.

I.A. : How do you think MassMarket develops ideas in a different ways than other studios?

J.L. : As I mentioned, we pride ourselves on being able to infuse an understanding of design into all of our projects. Of course if a project is rooted in realism, like the Travelers Umbrella spot we did, we go a more traditional route and focus on how we can do it to make it look completely real and integrated. But for other projects, we like to pull in a designer to see how we could make something different or add more of an edge to it.

I.A. : anything else I should know?

J.L. :We are rock stars!

A big thank you to Shannon
