| Pascal Blanché was trained at the art school of Luminy (Marseille) and has now been working as an Art Director for Ubisoft Montreal since 2002. Pascal’s artwork goes beyond mere character modelling, and it’s why we have wished to share and examine his art with you. ITS ART. With artwork showing a strong commitment to pale and overexposed tones and resembling half modelling, half cartoon, how do you situate yourself in the CG world? Would you say as a digital sculptor, a digital artist or simply a craftsman? Pascal Blanché What I really get a kick from is illustration. The CG medium is the one that suits me best for taste matters: Since I have been a kid, I’ve been dreaming of making traditional animated films, like the special effect movies of Ray Harry Hausen or Star Wars…and I’ve been a fantasy / Sci-fi buff since donkey’s years. I read a lot as a child, novels, comic strips and comic books, mangas, and well, basically, in CG I found a medium that could express all these influences. I.A. What do you think makes your artwork instantly recognizable? Is it the shapes, the colours? P.B. Yes, among other stuffs…More specifically, I think I am one of the few (not the only one) who work with 3D software to create illustrations; I rarely ever get satisfied with mere modelling. I.A. Why did you mainly choose to focus on character representation? P.B. For a matter of taste. I was already creating puppets when I was 12. I am still fascinated by the power of giving birth to creatures and to breathe a story into them, a past… Here again, animated movies such as Dark Crystal are certainly linked to this passion for 3D character design. Yet, I feel like having a go at scenery design…, well, I will. |

| I.A. So you are related to the celebrated Ray Harryhausen and, so are your paintings. Could we say that he was a decisive factor in your orientation? Completely! I do quote him very often, because I have watched his movies again and again on the occasion of repeats as a child… I think I was mainly influenced by the magic that emanated from his work as the statues were coming to life, and Cyclopes were attacking sailors… It was just like in the books. Special effects were obvious, but they also were one of the most attractive assets of these films. As well, I think that it’s what my taste for dusty images stems from. : ) |
