What happens when three Baden-Württemberg Film Academy students come together to create a short film? The answer is “458nm,” a beautiful short about the essences of life, love, stuggle and death. After the film’s instant success, Jan Bitzer, Ilija Brunck and Tom Weber formed Polynoid and continue to collaborate to create spectacular work. I‘ll let Jan tell you the rest…
IT'S ART: Can you tell us a little about the history of the studio?
Jan Bitzer: Polynoid is not a studio so to speak, so far we have no facilities which we call our own. Like we claim in our profile, as of now we are just a collective of individuals in the creative field. Polynoid was founded after Ilija, Tom and myself worked together on "458nm" in 2006. We thought it would be a good idea to establish a brand under which we work as a collective, the only question was finding the right name.
IA: Can you tell us more about the other members of Polynoid? How do you share the different tasks?
JB: We just expanded our group to include two more friends/members. First is Csaba Letay, he adds the motion design and moving graphics factor to our team. And the other new member is Fabian “Pit” Pross, our first native Technical Director. Tom Weber is our 'in-house' designer and concept artist. Ilija Brunck takes care of everything animation/vfx animation related and also manages the overall workflow and pipelining. And me, I'm more of a creative director and take care of the look development, lighting/shading and most of the time do the editing. Of course, there are many more tasks during a project but since everybody comes more or less from 3D production, we share many tasks in a general way.
