The flooded village theme returns frequently in Hayao Miyazaki's films. The Roman city which appears to the end of the Cagliostro’s Castle (1979), and the city of Mimi submerged by a pouring rain in "The Adventures of Small Panda" (1973), a short film by Isao Takahata and written by Miyazaki, are some examples. In Ponyo on the Cliff, Sosuke's village and Lisa as well disappear under the waters. All the villages flooded by Hayao Miyazaki have in common that they do not disappear under dirty murky water, but in a clear and crystal clean water.
We can see the flourishing gladiolas in the film. The gladiola has several meanings in the language of flowers, including "passionate love", "souvenir", "effort", and "forgetting". Few flowers symbolize so many ideas at the same time. Hayao Miyazaki expresses his desire to represent gladiolas in the film during the production phase. Metaphor of simple and passionate love for Ponyo and the efforts made by Sosuke to surmount the test given to him, and symbol of forgetting which seizes the characters when they resume their ordinary lives.
