IT’S ART: Can you tell us more about this film and why you guys created it?

Maximilien Royo: “Peas/Carrots” is the second short film created by our team that consists of Cedric Berthier, Jean-Sebastien Leroux and myself. It is also our senior thesis for the EESA, a school for 3D animation and special effects.

IA: How did the main theme and the scenario develop over time?

MR: The initial idea was to make a small comic clip about a fly that would only live for one day but the scenario evolved a lot with time.

IA: Did you decide in advance to build the scenery and then add 3D elements to it?

MR: We all agreed that the film was not to be done in full 3D. Instead we wanted to mix techniques. We think it is more interesting and the atmosphere of filming is a unique experience that is totally different from sitting in front of a computer screen for days.Later on, and as the scenario evolved we felt obliged to use appropriate techniques such as filming in high definition.

IA: On your blog you have published your creative process and in particular the creation of the characters. How did you split up the work on the different parts of the movie between yourselves?

MR: In fact we believe that each one of us should put a part of himself in each part of the project. This builds a rich and constructive dialogue between the members of the team and everybody is aware of each and every detail and we all know how to proceed in each part. That is an important experience we’ll need later when we work in a production house where the work is almost always divided. But of course, each one of us has his own special skills and strengths that he invested more than others in certain areas of the film.

IA: Where did you get your inspiration from while working on this film? Can you link it to any artist or artistic work?

MR: The fact that we are three people from three different cultural backgrounds working on this short makes it hard to define inspiration sources. Some people compare our work to Pixar films; we wouldn’t say we don’t like that comparison!
