Parallel Worlds, when digital art meets trading card game

Terry Chapman contacted us a few days ago to present Parallel Worlds, a traditional trump Sci Fi trading card game, contemporized and illustrated with artwork from many digital artists. We already have some of the artists in our Magazine and Gallery such as Paul Gerrard, Marta Dahlig, and Jacek Kaczynski. With other extremely impressive artists like Volkan Korkmaz, Martin Pelletier, Axel Medellin, Aaron Ijams and Alejando Diaz, we wouldn’t normally review trading cards, however this collection is really a work of art in its own right, which will not only attract players, but also digital art lovers.

About the Game

Parallel Worlds isn’t attempting to be a trading card game in what’s now become the generalized sense of the genre, but more what is known as a “Filler” Trump TCG, and with a trump based strategy comes a very rapid game play format, best enjoyed in the 4 player 2 x teams of 2 mode. The playing deck currently (expansion sets are planned) consists  of 25 cards, made up of four 6 card suits belonging to the Elements Earth, Air, Fire and Water, and The Portal Stone, The Key to Cosmic Time Travel, which is the most powerful card in the entire deck. Each Elemental suit has a House name belonging to a particular Alien Species, and is comprised of 6 Temporal Adjusters; Emperor, Spellmaster, Priestess, Paladin, Archangel and a Gatekeeper, their Houses Guardians of Parallel Dimensional Activity.

As with almost all card games luck plays a part in Parallel Worlds, with each player being dealt 5 random Temporal Adjuster cards. Before game play begins the player or teams are given the opportunity to choose which of the four Elemental suits will be temporarily elevated to the status of Portal Suit, becoming more powerful than any of the remaining 3 suits for the duration of the hand.

Using a combination of the remaining suits and the Portal Suit, players now battle their Temporal Adjusters against their opponents Temporal Adjusters in a sequence of rounds called Temporals. A player has an infinite variety of strategies to choose from, however tactics in choosing which Temporal Adjusters to play at any given time are governed by which Temporal Adjusters are currently being played and which Temporal Adjusters have already been played.  A typical game of Parallel Worlds is made up of 11 points. The first team or individual to reach zero controls the Portal Stone and wins the Key to Cosmic Time Travel.

Parallel Worlds is a stand alone game, however new Houses will be made available for collection and integration into any starter deck, enabling every player to customize their own deck to their personal taste. Before play commences each player may then select a complete 6 card suit from their own customized deck to represent them as "Temporal Adjuster" within the game.

What the artists say about Parallel Worlds

Paul Gerrard - UK: House of Kreyn

"I was very excited to hear about Parallel Worlds, firstly because of the epic storyline and the sheer imagination weaving through the threads of characters, worlds, scenery. Secondly I found the individual houses or clans of trading card characters lend themselves extremely well to the theories behind a lot of my own characters, creating a very enjoyable and rewarding relationship between the art produced and story elements involved. I look forward to watching the future of Parallel Worlds unfold as its popularity increases, and the depth of its content expands even more so, an enjoyable and extremely interesting project to be part of."

Jacek Kaczynski - Poland: House of Luthusia

" My opinion of science is that everything is possible and occurs somewhere in the Universe. My illustrations have been made according to this principle. You can find in my work elements of Science Fiction, fairytales, legends and clean imagination. I love to blend different influences in my artwork, and I love liberty of imagination, which is not limited by habits or schemes. The things which I create do not have an equivalent in the known world but I believe they exist in an alternative world, even if it is the world of my imagination. I'm happy that some of my art takes place in Parallel Worlds."

Axel Medellin - Mexico: House of Ogenika

"I've been doing illustration of concept art (robots and ancient technology) mainly for myself and for expanding my portfolio for quite a time now.Parallel Worlds is the first time I've been able to get to print some of my personal works to share with people outside. I've had lots of published work so far, but before this almost none of my wildest ideas, I'm deeply grateful for this chance."

Aaron Ijams - USA: House of Iqidian

"I'm really excited to be part of this so close to the beginning. Parallel Worlds has really pulled together a lot of wonderful talent from across the globe, and I'm proud to stand among them. The images selected from my portfolio for the game are all a mix of digital painting, 3D rendering, photo-manipulation, in some cases sculpture, and actual paint. I think my works blend well with the many media and styles of the other artists, and I'm really excited for the future."

Martin Pelletier – Canada – House of Elideus

"It was thrilling for me to hear from Mr. Chapman regarding his interest in my artwork, especially after seeing the Parallel world website. The artwork in there was mind-blowing and I just hope that my illustrations will help the players in their immersion of this great game."

Alejandro Diaz – USA – House of Meihndor

"I have always drawn inspiration from my dreams and nightmares, and for the most part, my paintings tend to be pretty close to something seen in them. Artistically I have always been inspired by the works of Barlowe, Beksinski and Giger, and perhaps it was my admiration of their works that has seemingly painted my dreamworld with their images.
I was very happy to be given the opportunity to have my artwork featured in Parallel Worlds alongside other very talented artists, and I can only hope that the success of the game allows me to participate again in the future."
