Part 3

It's art : How did you manage the heat effects and explosions?

RTUK : We used Particle Flow and Afterburn for the explosions. We spent a lot of time carefully studying explosion footage and fine tweaking our particle systems so that the volumes of smoke would expand, roll and grow in the correct way. Strong ambient omni lights and Afterburn’s explode daemons were used to create the firey core to these explosions.  The heat effects were also created as an Afterburn system and then composted into the footage as a distortion effect.

I.A. - Have you developed some special scripts for these parts? For others?

RTUK - No, not really.

I.A. - Was it a different challenge from the previous one you’d worked on? Why?

The biggest challenge was the size and diversity of the environments.  Luckily we had recently acquired a talented matte painter. The conceptual art we produced helped our team visualise and pin down the environments we needed to build and matte paintings contributed a lot to final look of the final piece.

I.A. - How does RealtimeUK help clients get  an unique vision for their project?

RTUK : There's a lot of listening and understanding of what the client wants to achieve initially, often asking a lot of thought provoking questions. Then our creatives spring into action, looking at solutions which often weren't on the radar initially.  We're prepared to go out on a limb with our suggestions & advice if we believe the project, and ultimately the client, will benefit.

I.A - What’s your studio motto or philosophy?

RTUK - The key thing is the quality of the end result and making sure the client has a movie which will sell their game/product. But at the same time we really want to enjoy the journey :)

I.A. - Anything else?

RTUK - We love surprises! One of the great things about working at RealtimeUK is that there's always a cool project around the corner. Life does feel like a box of chocolates at times.
