Short movie

IA: The sequences that does the transition between the heart of the city and the flying above looks like Kubrick's class 2001. Coincidence?

JJP : I had this light sequence in mind, with all the neon panels flying and making trails. I had already started to work on the shot, when I discovered 2001. Such a shock for me, as some people kept on describing it to me as boring and flat, it kept me awake for a whole night. I was really amazed by its strength and at the same time it's great purity, the incredible power of minimalism. I would say coincidence at first but then I carefully looked at how this moment was crafted in Kubrick's film, the closest shot to what I tried to achieve.

IA: In a few minutes you describe in a poetic manner a city from inside to a larger view, was this a natural way for you to construct the short? Have you changed the montage during the creation or was it the primary idea?

JJP : It's hard to say, or to explain. It was intuitive for me. I had the feeling that it was necessary to visually cool down at the end, like a breath of fresh air after a sauna. And the city had to construct to this sculpture so it was the most natural way to show it. I changed a bit the montage but only of some shots in the middle that don't have a major influence on the film. And I cut a part of the pull out to fit the pace of the film.

IA: What was the most difficult part to do? Why?

JJP : The hardest was the trail of lights because I had to figure out technically how to do them. And before finding a very simple solution, I went through some difficult trials and spent about a week on research. I also lost two months of work during the Chritmas break because of a hard disk failure. And I had to redo the sound after being left by my sound designer a few days before the premiere.

IA: What projects are you working on now?

JJP : I'm looking for a position as a director and I'm making some music on the side. I'm roughly thinking about some short film projects or music videos, ideas pop into my head as I listen to music that I lay down as rough storyboards. I'm not yet on a concrete project. I'd love to be though !

IA: Would you like to add anything else?

JJP : I'm dying to work in the field of documentary / cinema, action, photography or direction. I would love for someone to offer me a collaboration.
