Making Of : Sony Cybershot by Swiss

Swiss conceived the special effects of the last spots of Sony for the launching of its new digital cam. By concentrating all its efforts textually and visually on Sony’s digital cams motto “You are what you take pictures of” Stylewar and Swiss created a visually advanced spot. We spoke with Erik Holmedal of Swiss and asked him to give us more details about the conception of this spot.

IT'S ART - What were the technical choices that you have taken?

Erik Holmedal - The technical choices taken were mostly based on what we had available, what tools were needed in the process and the number of those resources during the production time.

The software used for the project was Autodesk Maya as main 3D-application as well as Mental ray for rendering. We used Maya´s nCloth for simulation of the actual photo heads in combination with hand animation for specific effects. All 3D tracking was made with Realviz Match mover Pro which needed to be accurate to be able to get the photo heads stuck at the same place no matter what movement of the neck. To get the right movement, we made swimming caps which we put tracking markers on as well as necklaces with tracking markers to separate head movement from neck movement. All 3D work, tracking and Rendering was made on HP workstations and HP render nodes which are 1U rack servers. For compositing 3D rendered material together with the live action plate we used Apple Shake. The hardware used was Apple Mac Pro´s with ordinary Graphics cards as well as video cards from Aja and reference monitors from Barconet.

IT'S ART – Can you tell us more about the pipeline used to produce this commercial?

Erik Holmedal - I added our render manager Rush and our in-house propriety software called lacrosse which integrates and automates manual steps in the process.
