creator of "Tête à Claques" - Interview Via Vancouver Animation
by Mario Pochat
VA.- Was attracting and negotiating with the big networks such as Canal Plus in France an easy task?
MB.- It was an easy task in the sense that we were both living a 'premiere'. I've never had to work with the Television Industry before and; on their side, they?ve never purchased a property which 1st run was on the Internet and which viral popularity was so big. So we were both on a learning curve, doing this kind of deal for the first time. The process was then very collaborative and open-minded... it was great!
VA.- How do you foresee TAC in the long term?
MB.- The Internet is an amazing creation and communication tool. It has allowed me, as a creator, to produce on my own and with little means, video clips viewed millions of times, without having to wait for a producer or a broadcaster to greenlight me. But, the most
amazing thing about this whole adventure... is that we're still there after almost 3 years with more than a million fans coming each month to watch a new clip! From the viral phenomenon that we were in 2007, we're now an established brand, a profitable company and a performant
portal which audience is stable and loyal (68% of returning visitors!!). So what is our plan? Well, as we speak, we're developing a TV series (26mn format) with Teletoon Canada (I wish
we're be able to broadcast in late 2010); we want to continue to create for Internet and we?re exploring new formats for Têtes à claques such as interactive games and funny i-Phone apps... lots of projects! ?
VA.- Do you aspire to direct an Animated Feature Film with all the bells and whistles? Such as Nightmare before Christmas or Chicken Run?
MB.- I am not against that idea; but to be honest: my team and I are really focused on the TV show right now. We want to create an original and engaging TV series and that is my main aspiration for the next 24 months. You know, it took more than 15 years before we saw The Simpsons on a big screen... I feel no rush for us to become a Feature Film.
