IT'S ART : Have many elements changed since the initial script? And if so why?
MS: Over the past few years I have created several scripts that take place on Theme Planet but this is the first one I’ve completely finished.
I did have a storyboard as a starting point for this short but I had to skip a few not so important scenes to get the whole thing done in time. For example, in the original I planned to have a longer chase scene on the rollercoaster.
IA: How did your first short film evolve with time?
MS: In the beginning I created a much bigger and more complex plot but then I decided to start with a simpler story for my first short film.
IA: Have any other short movies influenced you in this project?
MS: Of course a lot of 3d shortfilms have impressed me and motivated me, especially most of the Pixar short films and several others. I really can’t say that any particular short film really influenced the style or story of “Theme Planet”...
I think partly I might be influenced stylewise by French and Belgian comics and science fiction movies. “Dark City” is one of my favorites.
IA: Lots of people really laugh when they see your short for the first time. Was it one of your goals to make a good funny short so close to classical animation?
MS: Yes, of course. I tried to make it as funny as possible. I also tried to animate the characters in a cartoony way and, although there are still some parts of the animation I am not completely happy with, I am happy with the results.
IA: How have you worked on the characters and how have you defined their personalities and looks?
MS: I tried to give all of the characters a personality and I also wrote a litte background story about every character. Not only for this short but also for possible future projects I might use the “Theme Planet” world and its characters for. Then of course I created several drawings of the characters from the front and the side and used these as background. I always do my images in Maya during modelling.
