An inside look at WALL•E with Neil Blevins

IA: Do you think that a movie like WALL•E will bring awareness and encourage people to be more careful regarding our planet and the environment?

Neil: The director Andrew Stanton has said in other interviews that the environmental message is not the main message in the film. At its core, the film is a love story. But, and this is just my personal opinion, I think it's a good thing to get people talking about issues like these. Anything that gets the public to question the status quo is a good thing.

IA: How do you think CG has changed the way movies are produced to today?

Neil: CG allows directors to create anything they can envision, but with that power comes responsibility. Just because you can now create whatever you want, doesn't mean that anything you create is automatically cool. It's important to focus on using CG tastefully; to bolster an already incredible story with strong visuals.

IA: How do you think the full CG movie market will evolve in the next years?

Neil: I hope to see more stylization. Most 3D films these days are going for something pretty close to photoreal, which is fine, but I'd like to see more full length feature films try out styles that are very different and that explore all that CG has to offer in terms of look.

IA: Do you think your work at Pixar has influenced your personal work?

Neil: I feel I've learned a lot about color and composition and simplicity of design, which I have been using in my personal work. Since my personal style is mostly dark and scary, I doubt that much of it makes it into the Pixar films.

IA: Can you speak about your latest artistic experiments? The last software you've played with?

Neil: I'm actually taking a bit of a break for the summer, to get the creative juices flowing again. I have a few model ideas for the fall and I'd also like to practice my painting a bit more. I'd love to tell you how awesome the latest software I've tried is, but that will have to wait till after Siggraph.

IA: Would you like to add anything else?

Neil: Thanks for the interview and a big thanks to everyone who has enjoyed my art, tools or tutorials. And a big thanks to all the Pixar fans out there!
