Making Of XVLTR by Daniel Arnold-Mist

XVLTR was a complicated process, one which needed many different stages of development to achieve the final result, but was a great challenge and fun to make.

In this tutorial I will try to give you the basic idea on how to achieve the same kind of results.

Part 1: Modeling

To start with I began modeling in Autodesk Maya. Maya has a great feature called “live” which basically makes it possible to work on the surface of a polygon model. To go into more detail I will use a polygon sphere as an example, but any model can be used. This was used to create the “frame” of the character.

To start with, create a sphere (or desired object) and make it live (Figure: 1)

Figure 1
This causes the object to turn green (even if you are in shaded mode note it will change to wire frame)

This makes it possible to “paint” curves onto the object using the CV curve tool (create>CV curve tool) upon doing this, draw your curves directly onto the mesh (Figure: 2)

Figure 2
Once you have your curves placed, create a NURBS circle (create>NURBS primitives>circle). The size of this circle depicts the width of the tubes you are going to make, so scale it to the desired size.
