Focus : District 9 - Behind the scene with Zoic
Directed by Neill Blomkamp and presented by Peter Jackson, “District 9” is a powerful Sci-Fi thriller set in Johannesburg, S.A. in the near future, where one million Alien refugees have set up camp.
As one of the VFX companies on the project, Zoic Studios was tapped to design and create 30 shots including the highly complex Alien Fluid, which was based on the behavior of Ferro fluid when affected by an electrical current. The team also created explosions, weapon activations, Alien weapon trails, an armored vehicle, blood and dirt debris.

We asked a few questions about VFX of Patti Gannon, Zoic Studios, VFX Supervisor.
IA : Zoic has done numerous VFX action shots including bullet hits, glass/ground debris, gas, trails, etc. Can we have details about some of these scenes?
The two biggest shots we were asked to complete were the alien fluid and the flipping of a Casspir armored vehicle. For the alien fluid shot, we designed and created a fluid based on the physics of Ferro fluid, which reacts geometrically to electrical stimuli. It is a viscous, mercury-like substance. A drop of fuel falls into the fluid, which reacts as it purifies it. The purified fuel then drops from the fluid, and into a fuel cell, which detects it and activates its locking mechanism. The fuel cell was a practical element to which we added animated CG parts.
For the Casspir armored vehicle, the live action plate included a practical explosion. We then built and added a CG Casspir that flips over and slides toward the camera when hit by an explosion.
For the wide shots of MNU headquarters, we created and added the CG landing pads at the top of the building, CG helicopters parked on the pads, and the MNU sign on the building.

We also created CG alien weapon parts to show how the weapons activate. This was done by adding animated sections to the practical weapon.
In addition, we also completed the following: CG fluid weapon trails were added to a shot of the exo-suit firing. We added bullet hits and debris to the windshield and truck exteriors during the MNU escape chase sequence. In this sequence, there is a helicopter firing on the truck in which we added the large ground hits from the strafing bullets. This was accomplished using mainly practical elements with some CG debris enhancements. During the MNU break-in, a large alien explosion hits the base of MNU headquarters. We added all the shattering windows (CG) and the alien components to the explosion. There were also a number of shots in which we added blood to people hit by gunfire.
