Joan Gratz invented the animation technique known as clay painting. Working directly under the camera with colored oil based clay. She created a a great piece of claymation, where the works of more than thirty famous artists is merged together and morphed into each other in her Oscar-winning Mona Lisa Descending a Staircase filmed in 1992.

Animated film satire of self-indulgence in a hungry world. Rapidly dissolving, reshaping images, made with the aid of a computer, create a stark contrast between abundance and want. A man eats, at first sparingly, but his appetite grows to gluttony, greed, and gratification of every desire. The nightmare that finally haunts him is the one that hangs over our disparate world. Directed by Peter Foldès, The Hunger/La faim first computer-animated movie to be nominated for an Academy Award as best short. It received other honours, including the Prix du Jury at the Cannes Film Festival in 1974 and other international film awards.
