FreeSpin3d - Interview with A. Fischer, Revolver's CEO

Revolver’s first product is FreeSpin3D - the first commercial solution for real-time 3D for Adobe® Flash®. The solution was designed and developed based on the company’s OL3D technology. FreeSpin3D enables the importing of 3D files directly into Adobe® Flash® as a MovieClip instance and extends the MovieClip API to include 3D capabilities, creating 3D content in minutes. Revolover has annoucend a new version of its free plugin and we asked a few question to Revolver's CEO about the company and its future.

IT’S ART: Can you tell me, what are the markets that FreeSpin3D focuses on the most? The game market? Others? And why?

Revolver: Our main focus is on the online content market.
Gaming is a major part of this market and a main content driver today on the web, but there are other markets that we consider significant as well: advertising, edutainment, and graphic design to name some. The rationale for our focus on these particular markets is quite simple - it’s the evolution of content, taking the user experience up a level – it’s a new creative and revenue stream for these companies/markets. See the effect 3D has had on games, movies, animation, and content in general.

IA: What’s the position of Revolver compared to Virtools or other companies? In what way do you think you’re different?

R: Virtools and its counterparts are client based 3D solutions. They require users to download their propriety software client in order to enable users to view content in 3D. This is fine if you have a designated user base that knows you. The problem that arises with these solutions is when the content provider (games, advertisements, and other real-time 3D apps) wants to reach the mass audience of the whole internet then these solutions are heavily restrictive as most users do not have these solutions. In general, developers and content providers want the largest user audience as possible. Our approach is different – we enable 3D content to the masses. We are able to do so by utilizing the existing abilities of PC’s worldwide and do not require the download of a software client. We run on the Adobe Flash player which has 98.5% penetration, which makes our solution available to the widest audience possible (only short by 1.5% ?). This approach makes our solution very appealing to casual game developers, graphic designers, education, and anyone who wants real-time 3D content to reach the masses.

IA: I’ve seen more and more news about your company in the CG communities. As you mentioned in your previous answer it looks like you’re trying to popularize your tool to not only professional people from the industry but also to all 3D enthusiast and hobbyists. Is this an important part of your development?

R: This is an important quality of FreeSpin3D – it was planned not only for savvy programmers but also, or should I say additionally for, designers and people who do not have any knowhow of physics, complex codes, and all that is needed for the current and available 3D solutions – online and offline. So for example, now creative teams at advertising firms or casual game developers have a new creative stream, literally at the end of their finger tips – no more “cheat3D” or costly processes – its 3D for the masses: designers and users alike.Having said that, we have targeted the savvy programmers as well – FreeSpin3D offers a Dynamic 3D API that they can tap into and develop as they do today, add their own new functions into the API and use new physics to generate their own unique creative creations.

IA: Freespin is free for now. What will be the future of Freespin? Will there be some paid and free version?

R: The basic version will always be free. The release of the full blown version of FreeSpin3D is intended towards the end of 2008. This commercial version will offer a much wider array of solutions, features and abilities for the 3D development workshop – its all under covers right now and we will unveil it in the next coming months – watch this space?.

IA: Have you ever thought of developing the content section on your website? To open it to your visitors, allowing them to upload (sell?) their own models?

R: We have received feedback from users that have requested this exact offering and together with them we are putting together a concept. We view user inputs and requests very highly; as such we collaborate with them to get the best solution and results. Contact[-at-] freespin 3d .com
